Pianist Jonas Karlsson – J.S. Bach on the piano

bach piano

Bach didn’t write piano works for the modern piano. He was usually playing his keyboard music on a harpsichord. Sometimes he also played on a clavichord.

Anyway: Playing Bach on the modern piano, sounds great.

Myself, I like the old russian ”piano school”, when I play Bach. And I think it is okay to use some sustain pedal in Bach.  It is not possible to make a modern grand piano sound like a harpsichord. But the only thing that matters to me, is to make Bach’s music sound beautiful.

One of Bach’s masters pieces for the harpsichord is the Goldberg Variations , BWV 988. It is a long set of variations on a theme.  Another great harpsichord work by the genius J.S. Bach, is the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903. And among works often played on piano recitals, there are Bach’s six English Suites, BWV 806–811.
