Not only J.S. Bach could write great organ music. The Danish-German composer Dietrich Buxtehude also had great talent for this. Perhaps Buxtehudes organ music is a bit lighter than Bach’s organ works. Buxtehude was born 48 years before Bach.
Among Buxtehude’s great organ works, I want to mention Prelude and Fugue in D Major, Buxwv 139. The music is so happy, and the fugue has alot of harmonic surprises and beauty. Another great work is the Prelude and Fugue in G Minor, Buxwv 149. That work has an amazing fugue part.
When I play Buxtehude’s organ music, I just try to keep it as simple as possible. I think Buxtehude should be played with a very straight forward attitude.
Many of Buxtehudes organ works are very happy music.
